Staying Secure With the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Town

The Democratic National Convention is here through July 28. As multitudes descend on Philadelphia to witness and partake in the creation of a piece of American history, the City will again be able to showcase itself, its people, attractions, businesses, and special role in the birth and growth of our nation.

Unfortunately, events like the Democratic National Convention and the large crowds they bring can increase the threats of theft or burglaries to your home or business. With the Convention in mind, it’s time for you to consider contacting a Philadelphia locksmith to assess and address your security needs to help you protect you and your family and the home or business (or both) you have worked hard to build and preserve.

What to Expect During the DNC

Philadelphia Locksmith Security Tips During the DNC Approximately 50,000 convention participants, including delegates, media, volunteers and other attendees have descended upon the Wells Fargo Center to hear speeches and conduct business including the nomination of the Democratic candidate to be the 45th President of the United States. Conventions also draw protesters of the convention and the party’s nominee or platform, as well as those calling attention to various causes or issues. Estimates have placed the number of protesters as high as 50,000, though the excessive heat and possibility of severe weather during the week of the Convention might suppress the numbers somewhat.

Those who can’t get into the Wells Fargo Center can still be a part of the DNC experience. Now through Wednesday, July 27, the public can participate in “Political-fest.” At seven locations throughout Philadelphia, this festival features interactive, multimedia exhibits, historical objects and special guests to entertain and inform about American history, politics and the race for the White House. Visitors can tour the City in search of 57 fiberglass donkeys representing the 50 states.

Smaller caucuses and committee meetings will take place at the Philadelphia Convention Center in Center City, mainly in the mornings and around lunchtime, and are open to the public. Throughout the city, there are also a number of events such as panel discussions on political issues, convention watch parties and even a popular late-night cable show.

To protect the participants and attendees in the convention hall, otherwise known as Wells Fargo Center, a number of streets in and around Wells Fargo Center and some interstate routes are closed through late Friday, July 29. Other streets and roads may experience rolling or temporary closures for motorcades of dignitaries and other reasons.

Just as those in the Convention need security, your home needs it as well during the week – and beyond. Increased crowds and the closure of certain roads can hamper your normal traffic routines and delay your arrival at your home. Perhaps you plan to check out the number of events surrounding the DNC so you can feel you’re part of the scene. With most of the delegates and media at the Wells Fargo Center between about 4 p.m. and 11 p.m., you might try restaurants in many areas of Philadelphia, including Center City, that otherwise would be busy. For all these and maybe other reasons, you’re home likely will be unattended longer than usual – including after the sun goes down. This can make your home an inviting prospect for thieves.

If you’re a business owner, the Convention can supply you large numbers of potential customers – but also those who may take advantage of your weaknesses in handling the crowds. These soft points may include where you place cash registers and obstructions that allow those stealing your merchandise or your meals to avoid detection until it’s too late.

Increase Your Residential Security During the DNC

A large event such as the Democratic National Convention is great occasion for you to take stock of how well your home is protected from crime and a residential locksmith in Philadelphia can help you.

Here are some tips to keep your home from being easy prey for criminals:

upgrade your philadelphia home security

  • Lock all doors, including those in the garage, and windows
  • Arm your alarm system and be sure your monitoring company has updated contact information in case it needs to reach you. If the company notifies you by phone, have it fully charged, on and next to you. If you don’t have one already, consider having a security camera installed along with your alarm. Display a sign from the monitoring company prominently, especially at or near the entrances to your home
  • Make sure your front and back porch lights and motion lights are on or activated
  • Use smaller mail slots so that would-be intruders cannot unlock your door by reaching through the slots
  • Keep your shrubs and bushes trimmed so criminals can’t hide
  • Don’t leave ladders, steps or other objects outside or unsecured that might afford intruders access to windows or other openings
  • Bring hammers and other tools that can break glass or pry open doors inside
  • Store bicycles, grills and other objects inside if you can safely do so. If not, lock them with case-hardened chains
  • Don’t leave a garage door opener in vehicle car that you’re leaving at the house or in easy reach
  • If you’re vacating Philadelphia during the convention, ask a trusted neighbor to get your mail and newspapers so potential intruders will believe you’re still in town. Request that the neighbor keep a lookout and call you or the police about any suspicious activity
  • If you’ve lost a key, have the locks changed immediately. A residential locksmith in Philadelphia, such as Phila-Locksmith, can respond. We can do so in as little as 15 minutes after you report a lost key and call for changed locks or rekeying

Upgrading Your Commercial Security in Philadelphia

During Convention time and otherwise, your business needs to protect itself against theft by customers and employees. Visibility is a key to commercial security and that visibility can prove difficult when you have a large crowd at your establishment. To protect it:

  • Install security cameras and make sure they operate properly. Have them visible so that shoppers, diners, visitors and employees know you’re watching and you’ll catch them if they try to steal. A commercial locksmith in Philadelphia can install a security camera or other system
  • Keep your windows and doors clear by posting signs to side of, above, or behind display windows
  • Erect wide-angle mirrors to help you see “blind spots” in the store or restaurant
  • Keep your counter displays low so that your employees can see over the counter
  • Strategically place your cash registers so that customers have their back to the entrance to your store and will have a much more difficult time leaving
  • Have sufficient lighting for the inside and the outside
  • Have a master key for yourself and to maintain controlled access of certain parts of the business
  • Place cash, business documents, and other valuables in a safe
  • Shred sensitive information, such as bank account information and credit card numbers
  • Lock or secure your trash bins and keep them away from the store
  • Display the address number visibly and prominently on the front and back of your building. Use colors for the number that contrast with the color of the building or surface on which you place the number

Locksmith Tips for Holiday Travel

Travel Tips from Your Local Philadelphia Locksmith

HolidayTravelTipsfromPhila-Locksmith

For most of the general population, the holiday season triggers feelings of excitement, joy, and the need to see distant cousins you haven’t spoken to in months.  According to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, during the Thanksgiving travel period there is a 52% increase in long distance travel just over the span of 6 days, and for the Christmas/New Year’s time frame long distance travel increases 23%. All this traveling makes the holidays an ideal time for home invasions while you’re away, and it also increases the chances of misplacing personal belongings, such as car keys, during one of your many stops this holiday season. At Phila-Locksmith we are extremely excited for the holidays and would hate to see the holiday cheer of anyone tarnished by running into any of the above-mentioned problems.  This is why we have come up with some simple travel tips that will make a huge difference in your life this holiday season.

Residential Locksmith Travel Tips

Traveling during the holidays can potentially put your home at risk to be burglarized. It is imperative to take security precautions to ensure that your home does not fall victim to holiday thieves. When the amount of people traveling increases that also directly affects the amount of crime in any given area, because of a higher volume of traffic in the area, and most people are absent from their homes as well. The following tips will help you keep your home and your family safe this holiday season.

  1. Have your home security evaluated.
    1. One of our residential locksmith technicians can come out to your home and evaluate the security grade of your locks as well as suggest any changes or improvements you may want to make.
    2. Our technicians are able to assist you with installing safes in your home to keep valuables secure while you are away.
    3. We even have locksmith technicians who specialize in home security and surveillance that can come out to install a closed-circuit television system in your home as well.
  2. Make it look like someone is always home.
    1. Leave your lights on a timer so at night it will appear that your home is occupied, this will help to ward off criminals.
    2. Leave a vehicle parked in your driveway to make thieves think someone is home.
    3. Have a trusted friend or neighbor pick up your mail so unwanted visitors don’t notice a growing pile of mail in your mailbox, another indication that the home is empty.
  3. Do not post travel plans on social media.
    1. While it may be exciting to share your plans with friends, other people see your trip to Grandma’s house in Florida as a chance to burglarize your home.
    2. Another thing to keep in mind in relation to social media, don’t post your new lavish gifts online because it provides unwanted eyes a look into what you have that they could potentially try to take.
  4. Unplug your garage door openers.
    1. Some thieves think outside of the box, and rather than try to gain access to your home through an entry door, they use the garage door with a universal garage door opener remote. If you unplug your garage door opener before departing this will leave thieves stuck in their tracks.
    2. Ensure that you lock your garage door if you operate it manually.

Automotive Locksmith Travel Tips

Upon hearing the statistics regarding people who travel, it probably painted a beautiful image in your head of Septa stations and the airport being jam-packed with with people trying to figure out maps, schedules, tickets, and even life itself as they try to make it to friends’ and relatives’ homes.  Surprisingly, most holiday travel (91% to be exact), takes place in the form of a good, old-fashioned, family road-trip, according to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics.  That being said, the number of people who lose or lock their keys in their vehicle is directly affected, and that is where the automotive locksmiths at Phila-Locksmith come in handy.

  1. Bring a spare key with you.
    1. One way to avoid falling victim to being stranded outside of your vehicle is to have a spare key on you or your vehicle at all times. There are little magnetic lock boxes that can be placed on the undercarriage of your car to ensure that you always have a spare key on you.
    2. No spare key? No problem, we can have an automotive technician to you to make you a duplicate key within as little as 20 minutes. They will be able to provide, cut, and program the key on the spot.
  2. Put a tag on your keys with your contact information.
    1. By simply putting your name and phone number on your key chain you will greatly increase the chances of your keys finding their way back to you.
    2. We do not advise putting anymore personal information than that on your keys as it could lead to future security issues.
  3. Go through a mental checklist when exiting your vehicle.
    1. If you make it a habit to remind yourself to do a checklist each time you exit your vehicle it will help you remember to grab your keys.
    2. Each time you leave your vehicle ask yourself a few questions: Do I have my wallet? Do I have my keys? Did I turn my lights out? This exercise will stick with you and become second nature, almost guaranteeing you will never lose or forget your keys again.
  4. Lost your keys completely?
    1. First we recommend retracing your steps, and checking those pesky couch cushions before you panic. If you find your keys, great! If not, there is still no need to panic.
    2. Don’t worry if you’ve lost your keys, a car key specialist from Phila-Locksmith can come out to your location within as little as 20 minutes to make you a new key on the spot. The new key will be cut and programmed to your vehicle and will have you back on the road within as little as an hour!
    3. While you  have a technician out there making you a replacement car key, it might be time to invest in that spare key we mentioned earlier, especially if you’re already getting a new key made, it will be easier on your wallet, and the technician to make a second key at that time.

We hope that these simple tips will make a big difference in your lives this holiday season. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any residential or automotive locksmith needs you may have this holiday season please give us a call. We have customer service associates on call 24/7 to help you out no matter how last minute your travel plans are. A technician is guaranteed to be out to you in as little as 20 minutes. We thank you for your business and hope the upcoming holidays are joyful.

How a Professional Locksmith Protects Your Security

Due to the nature of the services that a locksmith offers, one providing service must always be mindful of the security ramifications of their actions. In addition to upgrading, or altering, security at a home or business; locksmiths must also follow strict guidelines to ensure the continued security of their customers. Some unlicensed, and unprofessional, locksmiths may not have the same commitment to safety that their professional counterparts have. Without the threat of negative ramifications, a locksmith may feel comfortable putting someone’s security at risk to earn a few extra dollars. Phila-Locksmith believes that no part of your security should be vulnerable and it is for this reason that we adhere to strict guidelines that ensure our services only affect the communities we serve in a positive way.

Confirming Ownership or Authorization

When people think about the security aspects of a locksmith, they think about the tangible benefits which they will be receiving. Whether that is the installation of a new lock, the opening of a door or the replacement of a car key. However, a locksmith must think about the security of the home, business or vehicle they are servicing. Before completing any service, Phila-Locksmith requires its technicians to ask for proof that the individual is either the owner, or an authorized individual, in order to begin completing the service. This is especially crucial when our locksmiths are completing services like replacement car keys and emergency unlocks. An unprofessional locksmith who does not ask for proof of ownership, could leave a third-party individual’s security compromised.

In some cases, especially during home, or car, lock outs it is possible that the individual does not have proof of ownership on their person. Proof of ownership, or residence, may be locked inside of the car or home. In these cases, our locksmiths are authorized to complete the service, but that customer must be able to produce proof of ownership immediately upon entry. If this does not occur, our locksmith quickly notifies the authorities. Other locksmiths may be less stringent with their approach to offering secure services, it is these companies which can pose a greater threat to our communities as a whole. It is Phila-Locksmith’s belief that by advertising as a locksmith company, or individuals, that party is taking on the responsibility to not only keep their customers secure, but the community as a whole.

Storing Personal Information

Almost monthly it seems that there are news reports about the latest security breach of personal information. Whether it is Target, the New York Stock Exchange or even the federal government itself, data breaches seem to be rampant. This is one of the reasons that Phila-Locksmith does not store your sensitive personal information. When you pay by credit, or debit, card through Phila-Locksmith your card information is never stored. In the case that a card is necessary for a deposit, or cancellation fee, it is removed from the system immediately upon the service’s completion. Not only does Phila-Locksmith keep your payment information secure, but the cuts of your keys as well. When our locksmith provides you with re-key, or a replacement car key, they never store the cut information. This prevents anyone who would be able to view the key’s cut from making their own key to enter your home.

No matter where, or whom, we are servicing Phila-Locksmith maintains the integrity of your security throughout the process. Our locksmiths verify that anyone we complete service for is an individual who is authorized to approve the service. Combine this with the protections that Phila-Locksmith makes for your personal information and you receive one of the most secure service experiences in the industry. Not only do our technicians do this as a courtesy to customers, but also to the communities of Philadelphia, the Lehigh Valley, New Jersey and Delaware that we service. Between professionalism through the lock and key industry, as well as personal accountability, businesses and residents can put their security in the best possible position to be successful.

In Focus: School Lock Security

Administrators and teachers alike have a renewed focus on the security at their schools. However, ensuring the security of students and staff means that whoever is making the security decisions at that location must be aware of the different benefits of each type of lock. By understanding their own security needs, and the options that are available, school administrators can find a solution that works for both their budget and security needs. Below Phila-Locksmith has compiled information on some of the most popular lock functions which are found in use at schools.

Classroom Function

Classroom function is one of the most commonly found lock functions in school settings. With this lock function the door can only be locked by turning a key in the lock set from the outside. Once the teacher has opened their classroom using the key at the beginning of the day, the lock is set to passage mode. In passage mode, students and other teachers are able to easily enter the door as it remains unlocked. Another benefit of this lock set is that it can only be locked using a key. This prevents students from accidentally, or purposely, locking someone out of the room. The big drawback to standard classroom function is that the lock must be operated from the hallway. This means that during a lock down scenario the teacher would have to open the door and expose themselves to harm when arming the lock.

Classroom Security Function

The second function which we will take a look at is the classroom security function. The classroom security function operates in much the same way that classroom function does. The big difference is that the classroom security function allows for the lock to be armed by a teacher who uses a key from the inside. This allows for teachers to easily, and securely, lock their classrooms during a lock down scenario. The drawback to the classroom security function is that if the door is locked while class is in session, the teacher would have to be interrupted to unlock the door from the inside. This function would also prevent any students from locking the door from the inside, because a key is required.

Storeroom Function

The storeroom function is the most restrictive of the lock functions which we will review in this blog post. With storeroom function, the lock always arms when the door is closed. This ensures that there is no confusion about the lock’s current setting. If the door is closed, the lock is armed. The obvious drawback to storeroom function is that a teacher would have to keep their key on person at all times. It would also mean that the teacher would have to manually unlock the door every time someone wanted to enter the room which can result in unwanted distractions. If storeroom function is something that you are considering for a classroom which would be in use throughout the day, it is recommended to check with your local fire codes to see if this function is permitted.

school security

School security starts with having appropriate lock functions for your school’s needs.

Phila-Locksmith’s School Lock Security Recommendation

In addition to the three lock functions which are mentioned above there are also a few others which have a more unique function. Those lock functions not mentioned above include office function, corridor function and classroom security intruder function. Of these types of lock functions, Phila-Locksmith recommends the use of classroom security function for an average primary school. The reason for this is the function’s balance of both security and ease of access. Once a teacher has unlocked the door in the morning, the door will remain unlocked until it is reengaged. This prevents interruptions to class time whenever a student, or other individual, wants to enter the class. Additionally, teachers have the ability to lock the door using their key from the inside. This helps to keep that teacher secure during any type of lock down scenario.

Depending on the class structure and modus operandi of the school, a different lock function may suit your needs best. It is recommended to speak directly with a professional locksmith. By speaking with a professional about your security needs, he can give you options which will meet those needs without having to break your budget.

New Security Concerns Regarding Push-to-Start Systems

Earlier this month, USA Today released a story which claimed that keeping your push-to-start fob inside of a refrigerator or freezer when you vehicle is not in use can actually make your vehicle more secure. Most people would scoff at this advise, however there is some truth to the statement. However, to understand how a refrigerator or freezer can keep your vehicle more secure, you must take a look at the security system involved with a push-to-start vehicle.

Push-to-Start Security System

In a vehicle with a push-to-start system car owners are able to open their doors and start the car without having to use a key blade. This offers a great deal of convenience to the vehicle owner, however it can also help a thief to steal that same vehicle. The push-to-start fob for one of these vehicles must be able to communicate with the signal that is emanating from the car’s computer. Generally the range of this signal is just a few inches. This would mean that whoever was accessing the vehicle would likely need to have the fob in their hand or pocket in order to gain access. Unfortunately thieves are finding ways to increase the signal strength coming from the car’s computer.

As reported by USA Today, thieves can purchase a power amplifier for less than $20 online. This power amplifier can take the few inches of signal provided by the vehicle’s computer and send that signal to a length of 100 meters. If a thief was using a power amplifier, this would mean that your fob could be safe in your home, but still close enough to the vehicle to allow a thief to take control. So the question is; where do refrigerators and freezers come into play?

View below as two thieves use a power amplifier to gain entry to a vehicle parked in a driveway.

Possible Security Precautions

Due to the metal frame of a refrigerator, signal from the car’s computer would be blocked. This would mean that no matter how strongly the signal is amplified, thieves will not be able to get into your vehicle. However, in offering this advice USA Today looked past one crucial bit of information. The cold of a refrigerator will drain the battery inside of your car fob resulting in the need for a new battery earlier than expected. Phila-Locksmith recommends that to protect your push-to-start vehicle from break-in to wrap your fob in aluminum foil. By wrapping your fob in aluminum foil while it is not in use you are able to prevent against this break-in threat while also maintaining the longest battery life possible.

Now that vehicle manufacturers are aware of this security loophole it will be interesting to see how they will respond. Automotive thieves are constantly trying to get a leg-up on manufacturers which seems to now be happening with push-to-start systems. No matter what car manufacturers do, it seems that thieves will have their own strategies for compromising security not long after the security’s introduction to the market.

This blog post had been provided by Phila-Locksmith for the benefit of our customers, as well as the residents of the Delaware Valley. The Delaware Valley can turn to Phila-Locksmith whenever they may need a car locksmith to provide them with service for a push-to-start vehicle. With all of the tools and training necessary to provide you with service on these systems, Phila-Locksmith is the one company to choose for your vehicle.

Valet Key More Important Than Ever

Valet keys have been a way for car owners to ensure the security of their vehicle for a long time. However, with the introduction of technology which has made it easier than ever to copy keys having a valet key for your car is more important than ever. If you use a valet to park your vehicle, you are trusting that individual not only with an expensive piece of equipment, but also the security of your home, and possibly business as well. This is why Phila-Locksmith highly recommends that you only use a valet service if you have a valet key to provide for them.

Automotive Security Concerns

Online key duplication has become a security concern for some individuals. While the security risk is minimal in many circumstances, valet service is one of the scenarios where the risk to automotive security can be very real. If you do not have a transponder car key for your vehicle, using a valet service can pose a serious security concern. Using a key duplication smart phone application anyone with access to your key would be able to take a picture of the key and have a duplicate mailed to their address. If you do have a transponder car key system on your vehicle, then using a valet key can decrease the risk to your automotive security.

Home and Business Security Concerns

By using a valet key you can prevent anyone who will have access to your vehicle from also having access to the other keys on your key ring. Especially through the use of an online key duplication service, your home or business key could be copied. Since the thief would also have access to your GPS, you can easily be accurately targeted by thieves. With just a few clicks on their smartphone and your GPS, that valet could have a copy of your key and an exact address of where to use that key. It is for this reason that even if you do not use a valet key, to ensure that you remove the rest of your keys from the ring when handing your keys over to the valet.

Valets have been around for a long time and are certainly popular in center city Philadelphia, but advances in technology have left concerns about the level of security that you have when leaving your keys with one of the attendants. This is why it is wise to take security precautions before handing the key ring over to your valet attendant. Be sure to have a valet key to provide to that individual, if not; remove the rest of your keys from the key ring so that an online duplication service can not be used to make a copy of your existing keys. As always, Phila-Locksmith will continue to update you with latest security concerns regarding your keys and locks. It is important to stay, reasonably, concerned with smart technology in regards to security. If you are unsure about how smart technology could affect your security speak directly with a professional like the technicians at Phila-Locksmith.

Thieves Thwarted During Break-In at Locksmith Shop

In Evesham, England, some thieves attempted to break-in to the wrong type of business just weeks ago. During the early morning hours of January 14th, closed circuit television cameras on Amber Locks, a local locksmith company located in the area, picked up two thieves attempting to break-in to the business. Apparently, it did not occur to these thieves that a business which specializes in assisting with residential and commercial security may have solid security of their own to prevent thefts. After multiple failed attempts to break-in the thieves wound up leaving the location. The owner of the business has released the closed circuit television images and is looking for people to help bring these criminals to justice.

Importance of Commercial Security

At Phila-Locksmith we stress the need to have effective commercial security that is tailored to your exact needs. The reason for this is evident in this attempted break-in. Had the thieves been able to get inside of the locksmith shop, the business would have been ransacked. This would have left the owner of the business unable to complete his normal operations due to missing parts and machines. This would be in addition to any damage which would have to be repaired.Fortunately in this situation, Amber Locks had commercial security that was up to the test of these two thieves. The owner of Amber Locks said, “Whoever broke in damaged the door as they tried to get in, but we are locksmiths so, of course, we have very strong locks“. Strong locks are likely only part of what helped to drive the thieves away. As locksmiths the company was able to professionally install their own locks which were at a security grade which would be effective against such tactics. This thinking should be part of every commercial security plan. It is crucial to prepare your business properly for the threats that it may face to ensure the continued function of your business.

commercial break in

Above is a closed circuit security camera image of the attempted thieves.

In this case it was fortunate that the locksmith was able to prepare his security so that this theft was prevented from interrupting their normal business operation. While the owner claims that repairs to the door will cost about $100, that is a drop in the bucket compared to the loss of business and property that would have occurred if these thieves were able to get inside of the business. Local business in Evesham should be more likely to turn to the security services that Amber Locks has to offer after this effective demonstration of the commercial security that they are able to offer. Just like Amber Locks, Phila-Locksmith is helping business owners in the Philadelphia tri-state area to achieve the level of commercial security that they desire for their business. Contact us today to discuss the needs and options of your business directly with our technician. He is able to provide you with a free consultation that will help to identify weaknesses and strengths in your commercial security.

More Police Refusing to Provide Free Unlocks

In a move which is becoming more and more common among local police forces, a police department in Brandon, Mississippi, is warning residents that they will no longer be able to offer free unlocking service if you have locked your keys in the car. This move comes due to liability concerns that police departments have, now that automotive security has become more sophisticated in many model vehicles. Previously, many small police forces would offer these emergency unlocks as a service to the community, but this has become impossible for them to do with any regularity due to the new sophisticated systems in many new cars on the road.

Automotive Security Improvements

Here on our blog, Phila-Locksmith has detailed the automotive security changes which many major car manufacturers are undergoing. Initially the transponder car key systems did not cause a problem for police officers looking to help a citizen out. Early transponder chip car keys only effected the ignition’s function. Since the transponder car key still functioned the same way that a traditional car key would have with respect to the door lock. This allowed for police forces to continue offering free unlocking, if they had the available resources. Now there are even more changes in automotive security and safety which has made it impossible to offer unlocking service on a regular basis without having professional experience.

police unlock

No More Free Police Unlocks

Some of the advancements which have left these police forces unable to provide emergency unlocking include side airbags, thinner windows and enhanced door construction. Police offers are not professionally trained locksmiths so they simply do not know how to open more advanced car doors without causing damage to the vehicle. Since police officers have much more pressing issues to get to, it would be a waste of time for a department to dispatch an officer to assist especially give that they may not even be able to get the vehicle open. The recommended step to take to ensure that you are never left locked out of your vehicle is to find a 24 hour locksmith who you can trust and save their information to your phone. Phila-Locksmith has detailed some easy tips that will help you to find a locksmith who you can trust and will be able to turn to whenever you are in need of assistance.

The only time that one should call the police when they are locked out of their vehicle is if there is a child or animal locked in the vehicle. Many police departments will only even dispatch a police officer to unlock the door for an animal if the pet is in imminent danger. For now, you will have to make the call to your local locksmith if you find yourself locked out of your vehicle. Phila-Locksmith recommends calling multiple locksmiths before you find yourself in need of their services. This allows you to ask applicable questions and get comfortable with the company that you will be using. In the Philadelphia tri-state area, give Phila-Locksmith a call and trust your emergency unlock service to our professional technician.

Secure Your Home in the New Year

With two weeks of the New Year already behind us, many people are already beginning to wilt on their newly made New Year’s resolutions. One resolution, which is easily to make and keep, is to upgrade the existing security that your home has. Through just a small amount of investment, you can make your home much more secure than it had previously been. Our Philadelphia locksmiths have gathered a small list of recommendations which can help you to complete one resolution which pays dividends throughout the rest of the year. Even if you may not be able to complete your more difficult New Year’s resolution, increasing the security at your home is one easy resolution which Phila-Locksmith can assist you with entirely.

1. Have a Deadbolt Installed

It is highly recommended to have a deadbolt installed on, at least, all of your exterior door ways. A traditional knob lock is much more susceptible to break-in strategies than a deadbolt lock is. One common break-in technique which thieves use to disable a knob lock is show below. “Credit carding” is when a thief inserts a flat and rigid surface, sometimes a credit card, into the space between your door and door frame.

There are a number of deadbolt models which are available on the residential market today with varying features. Some are more traditional versions of a high security lock, while others employ smart technology in their function. It would behoove customers to speak with a professional or to complete research before choosing the deadbolt lock that they would like installed.

2. Re-key Your Existing Locks

Re-keying is a service that we already recommend whenever you move into a new home or apartment, but regularly re-keying your locks can also help to prevent your keys from falling into the wrong hands. Whether it is through lost or stolen keys, in addition to new technology which raises safety concerns, your keys can easily fall into the wrong hands. Having a re-key completed helps to make your home secure once again, but without the higher cost which would result from having an entirely new residential lock set installed. A locksmith can even key your locks alike so that you can conveniently open every lock with just one key.

3. Safe Installation

There are a number of reasons for a residential safe and the New Year is the perfect time to invest. A gun safe is highly recommended for any individual who owns a firearm. Not only does a gun safe help to keep your firearm secure from thieves, but also from young children. If you do not own a firearm, then investing in a residential safe can help you to keep even the smallest valuables in your home secure. Not only can a residential safe be used to protect valuables and jewelry during a break-in, but having a fire resistant safe can also help to keep your valuable documents and personal information safe from destruction. Based on the security needs of your home, there can be a number of safes that would best fit your needs. It is recommended to decide exactly which features are most important for your use before deciding to invest in a particular safe model.

Above are three of the simplest things that you can do to have a successful security resolution. There are a number of other lock and key services which can help you to increase your home security, but choosing those services would be based on the specific needs of you or your home. By contacting your local locksmith you can successfully complete a New Year’s resolution without much hard-work on your end while still achieving a calming peace of mind throughout the rest of 2015.

Reasons to Invest in a Safe

Safes help to offer security for even the smallest items which may be at your home and business. By having a safe installed you can rest easy knowing that your most valuable possessions will not be able to be stolen. Based on the needs of your home or business, as well as the valuables that you are trying to protect, there are a number of safe types that you are able to invest in. Not only can a safe help to keep your valuables secure, but can also help to avoid having those same valuables used against you in a break-in. Below we have listed some of the top reasons to have a safe installed at your home or business.

1. You Own a Firearm

If you are the owner of a gun, it is highly recommended to invest in some type of a gun safe. Gun safes can come in various sizes based on the weapon that they are storing and the intended use of the safe. By having your weapon securely tucked away, you can eliminate the possibility that someone is able to steal your weapon, or use it against you during a break-in. Equally as important, a gun safe allows for you to secure your firearm from any children that may be in your home and prevents any accidents from occurring.

2. Security and Accessibility

A safety deposit box at a bank is a secure way to protect your most valuable items, but it also limits the amount of accessibility that you have. By having a safe installed at your own home, you get a high amount of security while also being able to access your own personal items. With a safety deposit box you have to work with the bank’s own restricted hours, by purchasing your own personal safe you can avoid this type of restriction.

3. Document Preservation

Fire resistant safes are another wise investment for home and business owners. You never know when disaster can strike, but by choosing a fire resistant safe before anything occurs you can help to preserve your most important documents. This includes your birth certificate, social security card and other important commercial documents, which may be difficult to replace.
