Chinese Mother Refuses Help for Child Locked in Car

Last month, a mother in China accidentally locked her child in her BMW. We have chronicled how common it is for parents to accidentally locked their child inside of a vehicle and the dangers of doing so. However, this situation is slightly different from some of the others which we have examined. Generally, once the parent has realized that their child is the car, they will do anything to get the child out as quickly as possible. In this case, firefighters were the first on scene, but the mother in this case did not want them to help her.

‘Wait for the Locksmith’

In most cases, a parent would have the first person available help to free their child. After all, it was a hot summer day and the child locked inside of the car was already beginning to sweat. Obviously, for this mother, that was not the top concern on her mind. She told firefighters on the scene to wait for a locksmith to arrive to open the BMW door. She claims this because she did not want them to break the window of her car, or do some other type of damage to the vehicle. At this moment the mother was valuing her BMW more than the safety of her own child who was locked in the vehicle.

The woman’s car keys were left in the vehicle, so all signs point to this occurrence being an accident. However, it is appalling that once firefighters arrived on scene the mother did not want the child removed immediately. On a hot day, the temperature inside of a vehicle can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. Firefighters on scene when this child was locked in the car, honored the woman’s request despite the child crying and sweating inside of the vehicle. However, once the child passed out due to the high temperatures inside of the car, firefighters did break the window in order to retrieve the child.

Mother Speaks Out

Following the reporting of this story, the internet masses were quick to condemn this mother. Once reports were released, the mother of the child spoke out in defense of herself. She said that the reason she wanted the locksmith to open the door was that she was concerned that breaking a window may injure or scare her young child. The mother even claims that before the firefighters had arrived on the scene that she had attempted to break the window herself using a stone. Her response may go unheard in many internet circles which were quick to condemn and shame the mother.

No matter how these events went down, the whole situation is concerning. The child was locked in the vehicle nearly an hour before firefighters showed up, meaning that the mother is lucky to still have her child with her. In a situation like this, it would be highly recommended to break a window well before the hour time frame. When breaking a window, the window furthest from the child should be broken to avoid the chance that glass shards were to injure the child. In the United States, many police officers are able to open car doors, so it is wise to ask one if they are in the area. All-in-all, the key to keeping a child safe is a quick response when the child is locked in the car. For every moment that the child is locked in the car, the interior becomes that much hotter.

Man Beaten For Leaving Kids in Locked Car

(VIA WKMG) In the Northern part of Florida, one bar’s patrons decided to exact some vigilante justice on a father of three who not only left the children locked in the car for hours, but then attempted to drunk-drive away, once attention was called to his actions. Fortunately for the children they were unharmed in this case, but the results could have been much more tragic if it had not been for the wandering eye of a passerby,

One patron of the bar was outside around 2AM, when she noticed the three children, ages 5, 7 and 8, were inside of the car. The patron, Heather Weiss, had her eye draw to the vehicle after the children inside began honking the horn loudly and shouting for their father. Weiss, who’s boyfriend is the bouncer at the bar, notified management about the children and they set out to find the culprit. It was later found that a 28-year-old father, Joshua Delong, was to blame. After admitting the children were his, he attempted to flee inside of his vehicle, but was restrained by security, since it was believed that he was intoxicated. At this point other bar patrons who were upset about the entire episode which was occurring struck Mr. Delong as he was being restrained outside of the bar.

Mr. Delong was the 28-year-old father who was found to have left his children in the car as he drank inside of a local bar.

Once police arrived Joshua Delong was taken into custody, while no other patrons were taken into custody. To top off the entire story, Mr. Delong claimed that his wife was taking care of the children, but dropped them off in the vehicle while he was inside of the bar drinking. Upon investigation, police found that Mr. Delong had custody of the children all five days prior to the incident and that the children’s mother was not at fault.

For the passerby who found the children this was obviously a scary situation. Anytime you see children in a vehicle unattended it is vital to get help as quickly as possible. It is just a matter of minutes that could make the difference in saving that child’s life. Ms. Weiss did note that the children were both sweaty and crying while inside of the locked vehicle and also noted that the car’s keys were in the ignition. Despite Mr. Delong’s claim that he was “dragged out of the bar and beaten” it seems that he will be facing serious charges for his actions. More and more stories have been popping up of children being locked in cars and it is extremely lucky that we have good samaritans like Ms. Weiss around to assist those children who can assist themselves.

6 Week Old Baby Left in Car Outside Wal-Mart

(VIA NBC10) In a story that is becoming all to common this summer, another mother was found to have left her child inside of her SUV outside of the Wal-Mart on Franklin Mills Boulevard. Just last week we detailed the heroic story of a 3 year old who was able to save an elderly man locked inside of his car, and the dangers of automotive heat stroke. Needless to say, it is never safe to leave your child unattended in a vehicle, especially in the summer. In just a matter of minutes the temperature inside of a locked vehicle can reach dangerous levels, so no matter how fast the trip will be, always bring your child with you.

Luckily for this family, a passerby saw the child locked inside of the vehicle and called police. By the time that police and medical personnel had arrived on the scene, the mother had returned to the vehicle. The mother of the 6-week-old was taken in by police for questioning and after examination, the child was released to his father. Fortunately in this case the child was not harmed, but it is always important to remember to bring your child with you whenever you exit your vehicle. Below you can find a list of preventative tips that will help you to always remember when your child is in the back seat of your car.

Tips to Avoid Leaving Your Child in the Car

One of the best recommendations that we have at Phila-Locksmith is to put your cell phone with your child in their car seat. Not only will you remember to grab your child since you will have to get your phone from the car seat, but you can avoid using your cell phone on the road, which is illegal in the city of Philadelphia. Putting your cell phone in your child’s car seat is a perfect way to kill two birds with one stone. There are also companies which offer products that give you a notification anytime you have strayed too far from your child. These products attach to your child’s clothing and another sensor is on a bracelet the parent car wear. When this is used in a car, the parent would be warned as soon as they walked away from the car that their child was still inside.

It is always a bad idea to leave your child in a vehicle unattended. Many of the incidents of vehicular heat stroke that are occur and are reported by news happen when a parent claims that they forgot their child in the backseat. Unfortunately there are still plenty of parents out there who think it is alright to leave a child in the car, even if just running inside of the store for a second. While sometimes parents may be able to get away with a quick run into the store, it only takes one time for tragedy to strike.

Even if just for a matter of minutes, leaving your child unattended in a vehicle is dangerous.

The Dangers of Leaving a Child in the Car

The summer months are coming and in Philadelphia yesterday we reached 88 degrees. Some like the very young and elderly are more susceptible to heat related issues than those who are middle aged. This is why it is important to keep in mind that for no matter how long you are going to turn the car off, never leave your children in the car. It can take as little as 10 minutes for a car to increase in temperature by 20 degrees this makes an 88 degree day a 108 degree day! Prolonged exposure to this heat can be devastating to small children and can result in death.  Most municipalities offer free car lock opening if a child or animal is locked inside of the car. However, we understand how big of an emergency this is and we at Phila-Locksmtih are also offering to complete any car lock out service free of charge if there is a child or pet locked in the car.

We understand the danger this poses to the child locked in the car at that is why we are willing to help. In the event that you have your child locked in the car give a call to first your local police department then also call Phila-Locksmith. We will immediately dispatch a technician to your location in the event that the responding officer is not able to get the door open or in the case where our technician may arrive first since he is already on the road. If the officer is able to get your car door open, when our locksmith technician arrives you will not be forced to pay a penny.
