Car Key Replacement Pricing

Car key replacement costs always differ. They’re often impossible to guess. One specific kind of auto key may cost more or less than another. It’s always based on the exact style of key you need. If you own a car that was made decades ago and that’s equipped with a standard key, replacement costs may be on the lower side. If you own a newer car and have a key that includes a transponder, however, replacement costs may be higher. Note, too, that you may be able to program a brand new keyless entry remote all by yourself. This is based on your specific vehicle. You may or may not be able to program your remote without outside assistance. Professional help is indeed vital in some cases, though.

Auto locksmith companies offer remote and key programming and cutting services. Car dealerships typically offer them as well. Dealership programming and cutting service rates, however, are usually rather expensive. There are also many auto repair shops that specialize in key fob programming work. If you need a professional key replacement locksmith Philadelphia auto owners can trust for in-depth programming expertise and beyond, you should reach out to Phila-Locksmith as soon as possible.

Vehicles and Transponder Chips

Transponder Car Key Replacement PhiladelphiaYou may have no clue whether or not your vehicle includes a transponder chip. If you can’t confidently answer that question, you don’t have to enter panic mode. Simply bring your key to the nearest reputable hardware store, auto locksmith firm or auto dealership. A staff member there should be able to clue you in. You can also choose to test things out with the assistance of an extra key. This only works if you own a spare that began as a key blank. Put the spare key inside of your vehicle’s ignition. It should be able to easily and quickly open the trunk and all the doors. If your auto requires a transponder chip, it won’t be able to start your vehicle.

Locating a Reliable and Capable Auto Locksmith

If you’re looking for an auto locksmith Philadelphia folks can trust for high-quality professional car key replacement service, you can locate one in numerous different ways. Internet search engines can be helpful. Prominent locksmith groups can also be helpful. One example of this type of organization is the Associated Locksmiths of America. You can request a detailed licensed locksmith list from this association. If you’re searching for a locksmith Philadelphia locals can rely on for first-rate car key replacement service, you can also request suggestions from family members, friends, neighbors and coworkers. Cars and Keyless Entry Systems

Not all vehicles have keyless entry systems. You don’t have to play guessing games about your car, however. If your auto includes a keyless entry system, you’ll have a remote for it. Your remote is the only clue you need. You can also head to an auto dealership for further confirmation. An employee at a dealership can confirm a vehicle’s keyless entry system simply by assessing its VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) number. You should always make sure to confirm that you have been given the appropriate remote for your car. Look behind your remote. If the displayed part number is the same on the front and the back, you’re in good shape and have the right remote.

Tricks to Beat this Tricky Weather

frozen lockFall, in my opinion, is one of the best seasons. It isn’t too cold, not too hot, you get a bunch of free candy, and then get to stuff your face with a Thanksgiving feast. What’s not to love? This fall has been a little bit different, though. As I am sure you’ve noticed, there have been a few days topping the charts at 80℉ and then the temperatures at night have been dipping down to around 35℉. While these drastic temperature changes pose a threat to your immune system, did you know that they can also affect the performance of your locks?

As your neighborhood Philadelphia locksmith, we here at Phila-Locksmith always strive to provide you with the most up to date information regarding your home, business, or automobile.  We have a little science lesson for you to further explain what is happening to your locks. Thermal expansion is the movement of the molecules within any given object due to temperature change. Therefore if a metal object is heated up it will expand because the molecules are in motion and moving apart from each other. Inversely, when an object is exposed to colder temperatures the molecules within move closer together and become stationary causing the object to contract or get smaller.

Due to the expansion and contraction of molecules, your locks have been going through a lot lately, so you may have noticed them sometimes sticking or having a little bit of trouble to turn. In weather like this, that is perfectly normal. You may have even experienced your locks freezing already. Your lock can freeze overnight (or throughout the day depending on the temperature) simply because of any water or condensation that may be within the lock. When this water in the lock freezes to the tumbler, it can make it nearly impossible to use a key within the lock. The last thing you want to do is try to force the lock open, because most likely you’ll just end up breaking the key within the lock. And while a trusted Philadelphia locksmith like us is always around the corner to assist with a broken key extraction or lock change, it is still best to save both time and money. Here are some home repair tips for a frozen lock that we have gathered for you:

HeatingKey

  1. Keep deicer or WD-40 accessible in numerous locations. It’s no help to you to keep deicer in the back seat of your car, because if your find the lock to be frozen you won’t be able to get to the deicer to melt the ice around the lock. Be sure to keep some in your home and vehicle that way no matter the situation you will always have it handy.
  2. Use a lighter to heat up your key before sliding it into the lock. You may have to repeat the process a few times, but eventually it will melt the ice around the tumblers within the lock.
  3. Dip your key in Vaseline and turn it in the lock. This process usually takes some time and has to be repeated as well, but it does usually show positive results. You can also use this as a preventative method against the cold, and lubricate your locks once a week during the frigid, winter months.
  4. You can pre-treat your locks as well as the frame of your vehicle door to prevent the lock from freezing as well as the door being frozen shut.
  5. NEVER POUR HOT WATER OVER A LOCK, it will only add more water to the internal mechanisms of the lock and lead to more freezing problems in the future.

We hope that you find these tips useful and you don’t find yourself in a predicament locked out of your home or vehicle due to frozen locks. In the event that you do find yourself locked out of your home, business, or vehicle never hesitate to give us a call for our emergency locksmith services.  We have reliable Philadelphia locksmith technicians that are on call and ready to assist you. Even if you happen to break your home or vehicle key within a frozen lock our technicians here at Phila-Locksmith can extract your broken keys for you and even make you a new replacement car key or change your locks right there on the spot. Give us a call today at (215) 554-6109 to set up a service or even have a technician come out to inspect your locks and let you know what you can do to make sure you are winter ready.

Cars.com Ranks Top 5 Automotive Memory Lapses

Recently posted to cars.com was a survey of 1,000 motorists by Hankook tires. In the survey, respondents were asked about forgetful times they have had in the operation of their vehicle. Memory lapses happen to the best of us, and what seems to be like the worst times possible. Some of the results which people admitted to included forgetting car keys, forgetting parking spaces and leaving items on the roof of their car. Check out the complete list below which we have offered out own analysis of.

1. Forgetting Where You Parked

The most common answer given to the survey was forgetting where the individual parked. Unfortunately, there was no demographic information to delve into the causes which result in forgetting where you parked. One may venture to guess that the higher the age of the respondent, the more likely they would be to respond that they had forgotten where they parked their vehicle. Over 50% of people answered that they had forgotten where they parked their car before, with the exact percentage being 55% of respondents.

2. Had to Call a Locksmith

Taking the number two spot in the survey for forgetful automotive behavior is having to call a locksmith with 41% of respondents saying that this had happened to them. To Phila-Locksmith this does not come as much of a shock. The Hankook survey does not break down answers by locksmith service needed, which means a respondent could answer yes to this question for a variety of locksmith service reasons. Likely the biggest reason for needing to call a locksmith because of a lapse in memory is being locked out. Everyday, people find themselves in a locked out state, which occurs much more frequently than people would think. Another reason that someone may have to make the call to a locksmith is if they lost their car keys. Now locksmiths are able to come directly to the car’s location to complete replacement, which makes getting over that specific memory lapse a little easier to deal with.

3. Used a GPS Device for Navigation

With little background information on this third ranked memory lapse there are a lot of unanswered questions. First the statistic, 40% of respondents said that they used a GPS Device to get them started to their destination. If this includes motorists who are going to new locations, this answer is surprisingly low on the list. GPS is not only more common in vehicles, but also through the use of a smart phone. However, this number could also be very concerning. If someone has a memory lapse so badly that they can not remember how to get to a frequently visited location then it may not be the safest to have those individuals on the roadways.

4. Forgot to Put the Gas Cap On

Perhaps the smallest slip of the mind on the survey comes in ranked at #4. This number is surprisingly low, perhaps because individuals are shy to let such a slip of the mind known to surveyors. However, this slip of the mind is the easiest and least expensive situation to have replaced.

5. Forgot Something on the Roof

A surprisingly large amount of respondents answered yes to leaving items on top of the roof of their vehicle before driving away. A full 26% of respondents admitted to this slip-up which normally passes as bad daytime TV slapstick comedy. Of course, we all are busy in our own ways and in the excitement of the day, something like leaving an item on top of your car can easily happen, as demonstrated by the survey.

Hopefully this survey can act as a reminder to drivers to always take a second to calmly think about things which they may not think of otherwise. While memory lapses like locking your keys in the car, or forgetting a parking spot, can cost money and be a headache to deal with there can be more dire consequences. In some cases, parents have forget their child on the roof of the car while driving. It is important for all motorists to remember that there is always time to think about safety.

Keyboard Organization Helps Locksmiths Unlock Potential

When most people think of a keyboard, what comes to mind is the device which is used to type on your computer. The meaning of a ‘keyboard’ has a much different meaning if you ask a locksmith. Locksmiths will tell you that their keyboard is one of their life lines which not only allows them to help a wide variety of customers, but also do so in an extremely organized way. Depending on the locksmith, and the number of services he offers, you may find a variety of keyboard configurations which help them to meet their customer’s needs while making their job as easy as possible. We’ll examine some of the keyboard configurations which a locksmith may use as well as give our customers a look at the way we at Phila-Locksmith organize our own key blanks.

Locksmith Keyboard Configurations

swinging keyboardDepending on the type of work that a locksmith completes, and the space he has available, the configuration of keyboards can greatly vary. In many cases, locksmiths are working in restricted areas which forces them to conserve space in anyway possible. One way that a locksmith may try to do this is by using swinging keyboard panels. You can see this set-up displayed to the left. Much like you may find posters in a store, these swinging keyboards allow for the locksmith to maximize the surface area to hold keys while simultaneously minimizing the overall wall space that the keyboard would occupy. Swinging keyboards are an extremely efficient solution for locksmiths with shops that are small in area, or for mobile service units which have extra width in the vehicle. In many cases, a locksmith will take the most straight forward approach and that is a keyboard which simply rests on the face of the wall. Generally, a locksmith who has a board such as this will have the board start at about their waste level and go as high as five feet tall. This allows for the locksmith to maximize his space while also keeping all of his keys within reach. No matter the configuration that a locksmith decides to choose, organization is an important part of their keyboard. By organizing the keys in an easy to remember fashion a locksmith can quickly pull the correct blank for any customers whether they need a car key, residential key or high security key.

Phila-Locksmith’s Keys

At any moment, Phila-Locksmith keeps hundreds of key blanks in stock. These key blanks range from residential knobs to high security commercial keys and of course a wide variety of car keys. In addition to these keys, we work closely with suppliers which provides us access to thousands of different keys at a moment’s notice. With so many keys which our locksmiths must keep track of, organization is an extremely important aspect. Due to the limited room inside of our mobile services units, proper organization is even more important. In addition to a keyboard which holds many of our technician’s blanks, our locksmiths also uses a number of drawers and storage devices to easily organize their truck. It is our wide range of keys and services provided which allows us to be a top locksmith Philadelphia. The careful organization of keys by our locksmiths plays a large role in maintaining our comprehensive range of services to customers.

From Keyless Ignitions to Digital Smart Keys?

At the end of 2014, we covered the move that General Motors was making towards the implementation of keyless ignitions in a majority of the vehicle models that they make. This signaled the beginning of what could be a slow death of traditional bladed car keys, but a Toronto company wants to take this idea a step further. The Globe and Mail in Canada has the scoop on Keyfree technologies, a start up which is aiming to revolutionize the car key game even further than the introduction of keyless ignition systems would.

Smart Phones as Car Keys

Keyfree’s aim is extremely similar to what August and Lockitron want to accomplish with their smart technology enabled residential locks. Users would be able to install the device on their vehicle and then operate that vehicle through an application on their smart phone. Not only would this allow for the car owner to start the vehicle while they were in the car, but also remotely. In addition to remote function, car owners would be able to send, and remove, key access to other smart phones in just a matter of moments.

While sending access via smart phone will certainly lead to some security concerns fro car owners, Keyfree is angling, at least initially, to dealerships and rental car companies. Without having to constantly grab keys, or have copies made, these types of businesses could certainly benefit from the convenience that Keyfree is offering. However, these initial security concerns are certainly not to be taken lightly. Residential locks faced heavy scrutiny due to safety concerns when they originally hit the market and the scrutiny is sure to be stronger for Keyfree due to the ability for criminals to easily vanish with a vehicle once they have access. One way to alleviate this concern is the additional GPS tracking feature which Keyfree uses. Using the GPS feature car owners would not only give police vital information if their car was stolen, but can also be used in everyday situations, like finding your car when you have forgotten where you parked. You can view Keyfree’s informational video below to see some of the features that they are eager to offer.

It will be interesting to see how the retail market will react to the introduction of Keyfree’s product, but the features they offer certainly fall in line with the technical advancements which are expected to come to the security market in the next few years. The introduction of this product will also make for an interesting dynamic in the development of keyless ignitions and their fobs. Will major automotive manufacturers continue to make a slow change over to keyless ignitions before making the leap to smart keys? Or, will they seize this new technology and take their vehicles further down the path of technical advancement? Stay tuned to Phila-Locksmith’s blog posts to get updated information, or voice your opinion in the comments below. Would you feel secure using your smart phone as a key for your car or do the security concerns scare you away? Major automotive manufacturers will have to make that choice soon as technology like this continues to find its way into more and more vehicles.

Elderly Couple Nearly Dies After Locking Themselves in Mazda

As a locksmith in Philadelphia, we see a lot of cases where individuals lock themselves out of vehicles. In fact, that makes up a large part of what we at Phila-Locksmith do. We have, however, never received an emergency call from someone who was locked inside of their vehicle. The reason that this has yet to happen is that it is impossible to lock yourself inside of car without extenuating circumstances. One couple in New Zealand did not realize this and their mistake was nearly fatal. The couple, Mollieanne and Brian Smith, believed that they had become locked inside of their car when they entered the vehicle without the keyless fob. It was their belief that the vehicle, a Mazda 3 hatchback, could not be opened without the fob from the outside or the inside.

The nearly tragic event took place in early November on Guy Fawkes day. The couple entered the vehicle which was parked inside of their garage at nighttime, but once inside they realized that they had left the fob outside of the vehicle. It was at this point that the couple believed that they had become locked in their Mazda. Mr. and Mrs. Smith attempted to alert neighbors to their situation by yelling and sounding the horn. No one was able to hear them, likely because of fireworks, the night that they became trapped in the vehicle. The next day, neighbors found the elderly couple and assisted getting them out of the vehicle. At this point Mrs. Smith had become unconscious and Mr. Smith has having trouble breathing. Emergency responders who arrived on scene said that if they had remained inside of the vehicle for another half hour, they likely would have died of suffocation.

The General Manager of Mazda in New Zealand said that there was no design flaw in the Mazda 3 keyless ignition system. Not only did he state that he had not heard of a situation like this arising before, but also that the keyless ignition system has a manual unlock just above the door handle, as you would find in any standard or transponder car key system. Had the couple been aware of this, they would have been able to avoid the entire situation.

Mrs. Smith claims that the salespeople for vehicles with keyless ignitions need to offer full explanations of all manual overrides so that a situation like this can be avoided. This is a fair point, dealerships need to be aware that not all individuals purchasing newer model vehicles are the most technically savvy people. While a manual door override may seem like common sense to many people, it is important for dealerships to ensure that they are assuming nothing to avoid any liability that they may have in the future.

Benefits of Keyless Ignition Systems

Most car manufacturers are moving, or already have moved, a majority of their vehicles to a keyless entry system. The reason for this is not only for convenience and security, but also for the driver’s own safety. In light of the ignition switch recall that General Motors went through earlier this year, it was revealed that many of the deaths or injuries could have been avoided if a keyless ignition was in place rather than a traditional blade key. Security was the initial reason that many car manufacturers began placing keyless systems in their vehicle. While transponder car keys did advance the automotive security that many vehicles had, there were still ways to compromise security. Keyless entry and transponder car key systems have made it more difficult for thieves to get possession of your vehicle, but also made it more difficult, and expensive, to get automotive locksmith services completed for your vehicle. In the long run, keyless ignition systems offer such a combination of convenience, security and safety that the benefits outweigh the additional cost of replacement fobs.

Keeping Up With Locksmiths and Keys (12/3)

Since our last blog post, Phila-Locksmith has been keeping track of much of the news and happenings in locksmith related areas. Much of this news can be helpful to customers for increasing security while also saving themselves a few dollars. In the best interest of our customers, we have condensed some of the most important lock and key related news that has occurred since our last blog update. The topics that we will cover in this post are an update to the story of a Modesto locksmith who was gunned down during an eviction process, a burglary in Charlotte and KeyMe’s forray from only house keys  to attempting the duplication of car keys as well.

Stanislaus County Lawyers Probing Locksmith’s Personal Life

In July of 2013 a Modesto locksmith was killed during an eviction standoff along with a police officer. Following his death, the family of the locksmith wanted the county to take, at least partial, responsibility for the resulting death. Now that lawyers have begun to dissect the case, it seems that a large portion of the case will focus on the personal life of both the locksmith and his wife; after a judge granted county attorneys with three years of both marriage counseling and mental health history. The attorney for the locksmith’s family has said that this action represents a gross violation of the family’s privacy. It will be interesting to see, once this case goes to trial in August of next year, whether attorneys will be able to take such a detailed look at the family’s private life and whether it will have bearing on the outcome of the case. For a more detailed update on the information requested in this case, visit The Modesto Bee.

$45K in Damage to Charlotte Barbershop

Over the Thanksgiving weekend one landlord in Charlotte, North Carolina, received a surprise that he was likely not thankful for at all. After evicting a tenant who owed about a year’s worth of rent, on November 26, the landlord had his locks replaced by a locksmith to prevent the previous tenant from coming back. Clearly, there was a lapse in security, whether it be the lock, installation or simply blunt force, that allowed for vandals to get inside of the former barbershop. When the landlord arrived back at his storefront that very Saturday, he found that the locks were disabled and store vandalized. The burglars stole some items, such as the water meter, glass and sinks, while also leaving drywall and sheetrock destroyed. A contractor has provided this landlord with a repair estimate of $45,000. Which begs the question, could this have been avoided if a higher security lock had been installed? Many individuals are hesitant to spend the extra money for a more secure lock, but is that savings worth the loss that can occur if someone breaks in?

Is KeyMe Worth It For Car Keys?

We have covered the implementation of KeyMe kiosks previously, while their concept seems like a solid idea on paper, there are some logistical and security concerns. For those within walking distance of a kiosk in New York City, getting an apartment key at 7-11 seems like a much easier process than choosing a locksmith. Now KeyMe wants you to store a copy of your car key on their cloud system. KeyMe now offers duplicate car keys, but there is a catch. The car keys can not be made on the spot, and must be mailed to the receiver. Unless you have a second vehicle to drive around, then this can leave you without transportation for a week. Until KeyMe is able to offer immediate service, like a mobile locksmith, the provider of replacement car keys will likely remain locksmiths.

Continue to stay posted with us at Phila-Locksmith for the latest in locksmith related news, tips and information. For those in the Philadelphia tri-state area, feel free to call us at anytime to discuss your lock and key or security needs.

Update: GM Ignition Switch Recall

In June, General Motors made a rash of recall announcements for many of its most popular models. We covered how this could affect the amount of push to start systems that are seen in the future, but it seems that the current recall has not gone as smoothly as GM would have hoped. While General Motors has been able to get a sufficient amount of parts to repair the millions of vehicles that were effected under the recall, still 45% of those vehicle recalled remain on the road today.

General Motors Entices Owners

In hopes of enticing more owners to get their recalled cars repaired, General Motors is now offering a $25 dollar gift card to owners who take their vehicles to the dealership for the necessary repairs. With 13 deaths being linked to this defective ignition switch, with over 2.3 million vehicles getting recalled, General Motors does not consider the defect imminently dangerous to driver, but still hope to entice those owners to get their vehicles fixed.

Repair Deadline Pushed Back

Initially General Motors set a deadline of December 1st, 2014, to have all ignition switch repairs completed. As mentioned above, the car manufacturer was able to get a sufficient amount of replacement car parts, but dealerships were claiming that they were in need of additional time to complete repairs. With this information General Motors has given car owners until January 1st, 2015, to claim their $25 dollar gift card and receive repairs. Owners of recalled models should be receiving information and offer this week, either through e-mail or physical letters.

Interim Ignition Switch Solution

If you are driving one of the recalled General Motors car models, there are actions that you can take to increase your safety until repairs are completed. GM has recommended that you remove any additional keys or chains from your ignition key when it is placed in the ignition. The root of the recall is that the ignition could slip out of the run position while the vehicle is on the road. By having additional weight and stress placed on the ignition a driver is increasing their safety risk. With additional weight removed from the ignition key there is a decreased chance that the key will slip from the run position.

car keys

Having too much weight on your ignition key can have an effect on your ignition no matter what vehicle you drive.

There are several takeaways for both car owners affected by this recall and by those owners who do not own one of the recalled General Motors models. Across all make and model vehicles it is recommended to leave as little additional weight on your key while in the ignition. Due to the circular motion of turning the ignition, additional weight can cause wear and tear which could lead to needing repairs down the road. For vehicle owners who were affected by the General Motors recall, there are just under two months to get your vehicle to the dealership and cash in on their gift card offer. Contact your local General Motors dealership for more information on the recall. To check if your vehicle was one of the over two million vehicle recalled visit the government’s NHTSA consumer alert.

Auto Locksmiths Save Customers Time and Money

When one thinks of the services that a locksmith offers, the first thought is generally of unlocking services. While emergency unlocks are a popular service completed by locksmiths, there are also a number of other ways that a locksmith can assist you. One of these ways is through car key and ignition services. Before mobile locksmiths were able to bring the necessary tools to your location to complete service, customers had to get their vehicles towed to the dealership in order to have service completed. This was inconvenient and costly to car owners for a number of reasons. Fortunately, there is now an alternative that can save you a great deal of both time and money.

Car Key Replacement Services

Losing your car keys can be extremely frustrating, and always seems to happen at the worst possible times. In this past, if you lost your car keys on a night or weekend, you were out of luck until the local dealership was once again open for business during normal hours. This left car owners with a disabled vehicle for a long period of time, which is never ideal. While customers had to wait for the dealership to be open, they also had to pay for a towing trip to get their disabled vehicle to the shop for the service to be completed.
