Car Key Replacement Pricing

Car key replacement costs always differ. They’re often impossible to guess. One specific kind of auto key may cost more or less than another. It’s always based on the exact style of key you need. If you own a car that was made decades ago and that’s equipped with a standard key, replacement costs may be on the lower side. If you own a newer car and have a key that includes a transponder, however, replacement costs may be higher. Note, too, that you may be able to program a brand new keyless entry remote all by yourself. This is based on your specific vehicle. You may or may not be able to program your remote without outside assistance. Professional help is indeed vital in some cases, though.

Auto locksmith companies offer remote and key programming and cutting services. Car dealerships typically offer them as well. Dealership programming and cutting service rates, however, are usually rather expensive. There are also many auto repair shops that specialize in key fob programming work. If you need a professional key replacement locksmith Philadelphia auto owners can trust for in-depth programming expertise and beyond, you should reach out to Phila-Locksmith as soon as possible.

Vehicles and Transponder Chips

Transponder Car Key Replacement PhiladelphiaYou may have no clue whether or not your vehicle includes a transponder chip. If you can’t confidently answer that question, you don’t have to enter panic mode. Simply bring your key to the nearest reputable hardware store, auto locksmith firm or auto dealership. A staff member there should be able to clue you in. You can also choose to test things out with the assistance of an extra key. This only works if you own a spare that began as a key blank. Put the spare key inside of your vehicle’s ignition. It should be able to easily and quickly open the trunk and all the doors. If your auto requires a transponder chip, it won’t be able to start your vehicle.

Locating a Reliable and Capable Auto Locksmith

Your remote is the only clue you need. You can also head to an auto dealership for further confirmation. An employee at a dealership can confirm a vehicle’s keyless entry system simply by assessing its VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) number. You should always make sure to confirm that you have been given the appropriate remote for your car. Look behind your remote. If the displayed part number is the same on the front and the back, you’re in good shape and have the right remote.

Locksmith Tips for Holiday Travel

Travel Tips from Your Local Philadelphia Locksmith

HolidayTravelTipsfromPhila-Locksmith

For most of the general population, the holiday season triggers feelings of excitement, joy, and the need to see distant cousins you haven’t spoken to in months.  According to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, during the Thanksgiving travel period there is a 52% increase in long distance travel just over the span of 6 days, and for the Christmas/New Year’s time frame long distance travel increases 23%. All this traveling makes the holidays an ideal time for home invasions while you’re away, and it also increases the chances of misplacing personal belongings, such as car keys, during one of your many stops this holiday season. At Phila-Locksmith we are extremely excited for the holidays and would hate to see the holiday cheer of anyone tarnished by running into any of the above-mentioned problems.  This is why we have come up with some simple travel tips that will make a huge difference in your life this holiday season.

Residential Locksmith Travel Tips

Traveling during the holidays can potentially put your home at risk to be burglarized. It is imperative to take security precautions to ensure that your home does not fall victim to holiday thieves. When the amount of people traveling increases that also directly affects the amount of crime in any given area, because of a higher volume of traffic in the area, and most people are absent from their homes as well. The following tips will help you keep your home and your family safe this holiday season.

  1. Have your home security evaluated.
    1. One of our residential locksmith technicians can come out to your home and evaluate the security grade of your locks as well as suggest any changes or improvements you may want to make.
    2. Our technicians are able to assist you with installing safes in your home to keep valuables secure while you are away.
    3. We even have locksmith technicians who specialize in home security and surveillance that can come out to install a closed-circuit television system in your home as well.
  2. Make it look like someone is always home.
    1. Leave your lights on a timer so at night it will appear that your home is occupied, this will help to ward off criminals.
    2. Leave a vehicle parked in your driveway to make thieves think someone is home.
    3. Have a trusted friend or neighbor pick up your mail so unwanted visitors don’t notice a growing pile of mail in your mailbox, another indication that the home is empty.
  3. Do not post travel plans on social media.
    1. While it may be exciting to share your plans with friends, other people see your trip to Grandma’s house in Florida as a chance to burglarize your home.
    2. Another thing to keep in mind in relation to social media, don’t post your new lavish gifts online because it provides unwanted eyes a look into what you have that they could potentially try to take.
  4. Unplug your garage door openers.
    1. Some thieves think outside of the box, and rather than try to gain access to your home through an entry door, they use the garage door with a universal garage door opener remote. If you unplug your garage door opener before departing this will leave thieves stuck in their tracks.
    2. Ensure that you lock your garage door if you operate it manually.

Automotive Locksmith Travel Tips

Upon hearing the statistics regarding people who travel, it probably painted a beautiful image in your head of Septa stations and the airport being jam-packed with with people trying to figure out maps, schedules, tickets, and even life itself as they try to make it to friends’ and relatives’ homes.  Surprisingly, most holiday travel (91% to be exact), takes place in the form of a good, old-fashioned, family road-trip, according to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics.  That being said, the number of people who lose or lock their keys in their vehicle is directly affected, and that is where the automotive locksmiths at Phila-Locksmith come in handy.

  1. Bring a spare key with you.
    1. One way to avoid falling victim to being stranded outside of your vehicle is to have a spare key on you or your vehicle at all times. There are little magnetic lock boxes that can be placed on the undercarriage of your car to ensure that you always have a spare key on you.
    2. No spare key? No problem, we can have an automotive technician to you to make you a duplicate key within as little as 20 minutes. They will be able to provide, cut, and program the key on the spot.
  2. Put a tag on your keys with your contact information.
    1. By simply putting your name and phone number on your key chain you will greatly increase the chances of your keys finding their way back to you.
    2. We do not advise putting anymore personal information than that on your keys as it could lead to future security issues.
  3. Go through a mental checklist when exiting your vehicle.
    1. If you make it a habit to remind yourself to do a checklist each time you exit your vehicle it will help you remember to grab your keys.
    2. Each time you leave your vehicle ask yourself a few questions: Do I have my wallet? Do I have my keys? Did I turn my lights out? This exercise will stick with you and become second nature, almost guaranteeing you will never lose or forget your keys again.
  4. Lost your keys completely?
    1. First we recommend retracing your steps, and checking those pesky couch cushions before you panic. If you find your keys, great! If not, there is still no need to panic.
    2. Don’t worry if you’ve lost your keys, a car key specialist from Phila-Locksmith can come out to your location within as little as 20 minutes to make you a new key on the spot. The new key will be cut and programmed to your vehicle and will have you back on the road within as little as an hour!
    3. While you  have a technician out there making you a replacement car key, it might be time to invest in that spare key we mentioned earlier, especially if you’re already getting a new key made, it will be easier on your wallet, and the technician to make a second key at that time.

We hope that these simple tips will make a big difference in your lives this holiday season. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any residential or automotive locksmith needs you may have this holiday season please give us a call. We have customer service associates on call 24/7 to help you out no matter how last minute your travel plans are. A technician is guaranteed to be out to you in as little as 20 minutes. We thank you for your business and hope the upcoming holidays are joyful.

Smart Phones the Car Key of the Future? Not So Fast

As Phila-Locksmith has covered multiple times in the past, smart phones are becoming more ingrained in our everyday lives with each passing day. Whether it is simply the ever growing presence of social media, or the integration of home security there is no denying the keystone role that smart phones are playing in everyday life. Some automotive manufacturers have already begun integrating smart technology into their vehicles’ security systems. Some claim that this is the wave of the future, however; it may be sometime before this type of technology becomes common place. Not because of the cost associated with it, but because of limitations in functionality.

Auto Manufacturers Already Using Smart Phones

Despite the trepidation of many security experts, some automotive manufactures have already begun to integrate smart phones into their vehicles’ security. One of these manufacturers is Tesla. Tesla is an automotive manufacturer renowned for being on the cutting edge of technology. By downloading an application to their smart phone, a Tesla owner can complete functions such as starting the vehicle, unlocking doors and starting the air conditioning all from their smart phone. There is no doubt that this can be a useful function on a hot summer day, but there are still concerns which arise. Despite these concerns, in addition to Tesla; Volvo, General Motors and BMW also have a smart phone application which can be used to complete vehicle functions remotely.

Keyless Fobs Offer Greater Security

keyless fobKeyless fobs, like the Chevy model shown to the left, are the current standard barer for automotive security and convenience. A keyless fob allows for a vehicle owner to open and close their doors without having to remote the fob from their pocket. Additionally, the vehicle can be started without inserting a bladed key as long as the fob is located inside of the vehicle. Many vehicles equipped with a keyless fob can even be started remotely. This means that keyless fobs offer, just about, the same amount of convenience that a smart phone key would. However, there is a decreased security concern for keyless fobs. The first concern is the fact that smart phone battery life can greatly vary. If your cell phone dies and the vehicle owner uses their smart phone as the key, they will not be able to access the vehicle. Additionally, weak cellular service can cause delays of up to a few minutes when using remote functions. Volvo, one of the manufacturers to begin using cell phone applications, even has reservations about the usefulness of a cellular key. David Green, marketing director at Volvo, said that though useful in an emergency that cell phones as key are “not a viable way forward. Mr. Green went on to cite both the battery and cellular connection issues which we mentioned above. Neither of these issues are a concern for keyless fobs. In addition to limiting drawbacks, keyless fobs offer greater security because of the transponder chip inside of the fob. In order for the vehicle to start, or the door to open, the fob must be properly programmed to the vehicle’s computer. This new security system is unique and not many locksmiths can replace these keyless fobs, let alone criminals. It seems that until smart phone applications can begin to offer benefits which a keyless fob does not, their implementation will be limited.

Benefits for the Customer or Car Manufacturers?

With some many questions surrounding the use of smart phones as keys, and the comparable features offered by keyless fobs, it leaves one to wonder exactly why a car manufacturer would begin implementing this type of technology. While it is true that many people today prefer to complete as many processes as possible through their cellular device, there is also a big benefit to car manufacturers. If manufacturers are able to get their applications into customers’ smart phones it can open a large window of opportunity with regards to customer information. Targeted demographic information is more important than ever to companies, so car manufacturers want to use their smart phone applications to track location, preferences and much more. While this could allow for easy transition between two vehicles for consumers, the benefit is much larger for car makers. Vehicle manufacturers would be able to use the information about your preferences and locations to sell targeted ads from retailers and service providers. While some may find this convenient, many others could find it intrusive and a violation of personal privacy.

With many drawbacks to smart phone key applications, it will be increasingly interesting to see if auto manufacturers are going to find ways to overcome these drawbacks. It would certainly behoove auto manufacturers to find a way to use smart phone key applications because of the additional revenue source that it could provide. A key to the development of these application will be customer feedback. If customers find the ads which manufacturers will be able to sell intrusive, then it may not be feasible for car manufacturers to go in this direction. In the mean time, despite their own security concerns, keyless fobs will likely remain the top of the line product for automotive convenience and security.

Valet Key More Important Than Ever

Valet keys have been a way for car owners to ensure the security of their vehicle for a long time. However, with the introduction of technology which has made it easier than ever to copy keys having a valet key for your car is more important than ever. If you use a valet to park your vehicle, you are trusting that individual not only with an expensive piece of equipment, but also the security of your home, and possibly business as well. This is why Phila-Locksmith highly recommends that you only use a valet service if you have a valet key to provide for them.

Automotive Security Concerns

Online key duplication has become a security concern for some individuals. While the security risk is minimal in many circumstances, valet service is one of the scenarios where the risk to automotive security can be very real. If you do not have a transponder car key for your vehicle, using a valet service can pose a serious security concern. Using a key duplication smart phone application anyone with access to your key would be able to take a picture of the key and have a duplicate mailed to their address. If you do have a transponder car key system on your vehicle, then using a valet key can decrease the risk to your automotive security.

Home and Business Security Concerns

By using a valet key you can prevent anyone who will have access to your vehicle from also having access to the other keys on your key ring. Especially through the use of an online key duplication service, your home or business key could be copied. Since the thief would also have access to your GPS, you can easily be accurately targeted by thieves. With just a few clicks on their smartphone and your GPS, that valet could have a copy of your key and an exact address of where to use that key. It is for this reason that even if you do not use a valet key, to ensure that you remove the rest of your keys from the ring when handing your keys over to the valet.

Valets have been around for a long time and are certainly popular in center city Philadelphia, but advances in technology have left concerns about the level of security that you have when leaving your keys with one of the attendants. This is why it is wise to take security precautions before handing the key ring over to your valet attendant. Be sure to have a valet key to provide to that individual, if not; remove the rest of your keys from the key ring so that an online duplication service can not be used to make a copy of your existing keys. As always, Phila-Locksmith will continue to update you with latest security concerns regarding your keys and locks. It is important to stay, reasonably, concerned with smart technology in regards to security. If you are unsure about how smart technology could affect your security speak directly with a professional like the technicians at Phila-Locksmith.

Keyless Ignitions – The Future is Now

It has been speculated by many in the automotive industry that the clock is ticking on the use of standard cut key blades for operating vehicles. Not only are their security concerns which could be alleviated by switching to keyless ignition systems, but also safety concerns which could be eliminated. It what is a signal that this industry change may be coming faster than expected, General Motors is telling dealerships to replace the key systems on their 2014 and 2015 models for many larger vehicles which include the Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Sierra. The reason for this is the concern that the key can become knocked out of position when attempting to shift gears. This is reminiscent of the problem which resulted in the recall of millions of General Motors vehicles this past year.

Security Concerns

One of the benefits that many manufacturers can have by switching their vehicles to keyless ignition systems is an added amount of security. Transponder car keys have certainly helped to reduce the amount of automotive thefts that have taken place, but it only stands to be a matter of time before thieves are able to find new methods to disable transponder car key systems. As more thieves are able to become familiar with the technical workings of transponder car keys it is possible that they find easier ways to duplicate the programming found in transponder car keys. By removing the keyed blade, auto manufacturers can rely solely on improved keyless ignition technology to keep customer’s vehicles security.

keyless ignition

A simple button push can start your vehicle and provide safety in many new model vehicles.

Increased Safety

As demonstrated in the General Motors vehicles which needed to be recalled throughout the year, there certainly are safety concerns that can arise from the use of traditional blade keys. With minor wear and tear, or because of part failure, the key can be turned from the on position while an individual is driving the car. This can cause for the loss of power steering and brakes, which is obviously dangerous especially if you are on the highway. While the key slipping from the position is unlikely to happen, the possibility still remains. By using a keyless ignition fob there is no wear and tear which results from the repeated use of the ignition. This eliminates the possibility that the car can be moved from the open position while the owner is driving.

The added benefit of security does come at a cost. Having to get your keyless ignition fob replaced can be an expensive undertaking, so keeping your fobs secure and handy is a definite need. You can receive a replacement bladed car key much easier, and much cheaper, than you are able to have a replacement keyless ignition fob replaced. Despite this extra cost in the case that you have lost your fobs, keyless ignitions will almost certainly become standard on new vehicles in the near future. Their combination of safety and security allow for the most carefree driving experience possible. Following the recalls that the manufacturer had to deal with this year, General Motors seems poised to be a leader in the implementation of keyless ignition systems going forward.

Why is key programming so important?

It seems that you can never be too prepared, making sure that you have a spare key for your vehicle is actually one of the least thought about aspects of readiness. You see it used to be as easy as walking into your hardware store to get a extra copy of your vehicle key, now a day’s most vehicles come standard with a transponder key. These transponder keys have a tiny micro chip implanted inside them which communicates a signal to the vehicles on board computer system allowing the key to turn the vehicle on. If you take your key to the hardware store and they are able to make you a copy then you are in luck most vehicle keys cannot be duplicated easily which is why the need to know a reputable automotive locksmith is imperative. But if you are lucky enough that they will be able to make you a copy the key might open your doors but it will definitely not start your vehicle. In order for the copied key to start your vehicle you will need to have the key programmed by a professional locksmith.

Automotive locksmiths are equipped with the tools and computer equipment needed to program various keys to vehicles. And even though this is a common practice for most auto locksmiths it is a very costly procedure for the consumer. You see the computer programs needed to program the keys to the vehicles is not cheap and each time the locksmith wants to use it he will have to obtain a code from the vehicle manufacture which also does not come cheap. With all the expenses incurred on the locksmith plus his labor he will have to charge accordingly.

On average vehicle key programming ranges between $65- $165 depending on the type of vehicle the job is being performed on. Now this is the cost if you already have the key, if you have completely lost your vehicle keys and is in need of a brand new key then of course the price is going to rise drastically. By contacting your local locksmith company you can become more acquainted with the cost for replacing your vehicle key. In order to avoid these costly expenses be sure to get a copy of your key from whoever you bought the vehicle from, most dealerships will charge a small fee but it will be less than having to get a brand new key from a locksmith if you have lost the original. Automotive Locksmiths are here ready to help you if needed though so make sure you have the contact information for your local locksmith on hand for whenever you need it.

Man Formerly Accused of Drug Trafficking Sues Ford

VIA Lubbock Avalanche-Journal – A Texas man who was cleared of drug trafficking charges after previously being convicted of those charges is now turning a lawsuit against car manufacturer Ford. The man, Richardo Magallanes, says that Ford does not have effective counter measure to prevent criminals from getting key codes to cut car keys.

The whole incident began in 2011 when drug traffickers allegedly used a locksmith to make copies of the keys to Richardo’s car. They do so without the knowledge of Mr. Magallanes, and then planted drugs inside of his car to be unknowingly taken across the Mexico-United States border. While this is feasible we at Phila-Locksmith wanted to take a look at how successful of a suit Richardo may have to bring against the Ford motor company. In order to really get to the truth we would need more details on the case however there are a few situations that we have come up with in which criminals would be able to get their hand on the all important key codes.

For starters the key code is so important because it is necessary to use in order to make the correct cuts to a replacement car key for the vehicle. One possibility that could have happened was that the drug traffickers had a locksmith who was in on the commission of the crime. It is not possible for a client to purchase a key code without being a registered as a locksmith with the company, but the company they must register with is not Ford Motors. Ford motors has their key codes distributed to locksmiths through other supplier companies, an individual looking to purchase a car key code would have to be a registered member of the Associated Locksmith of America as well as provide other documentation proving that they are in fact, a locksmith.

So we now have it covered that you must be registered as a locksmith in order to purchase a key code like this, but that is not all that must be done in order for a car key code to be produced. In addition to registering the locksmith is also required to verify that it is the owner of the car that they are providing the car key to and they must also verify the VIN of the vehicle. The only other way that a criminal would be able to get a car key code would be if they were in cahoots with a member of Ford’s service department then that individual would be able to get the car key code, but obviously this is unlikely.

People have won ridiculous court cases before, but it seems as though the suit against Ford is a bit weak. Since you must be registered as a locksmith and must also buy the key code through a separate company other than Ford, it seems that they would be devoid of any blame in this situation. Another bad apple in the locksmith industry seems to be to blame, the best that car owners and Mr. Magallanes can hope for is possibly increased background checks on those who wish to become locksmiths.
