Car Key Replacement Pricing

Car key replacement costs always differ. They’re often impossible to guess. One specific kind of auto key may cost more or less than another. It’s always based on the exact style of key you need. If you own a car that was made decades ago and that’s equipped with a standard key, replacement costs may be on the lower side. If you own a newer car and have a key that includes a transponder, however, replacement costs may be higher. Note, too, that you may be able to program a brand new keyless entry remote all by yourself. This is based on your specific vehicle. You may or may not be able to program your remote without outside assistance. Professional help is indeed vital in some cases, though.

Auto locksmith companies offer remote and key programming and cutting services. Car dealerships typically offer them as well. Dealership programming and cutting service rates, however, are usually rather expensive. There are also many auto repair shops that specialize in key fob programming work. If you need a professional key replacement locksmith Philadelphia auto owners can trust for in-depth programming expertise and beyond, you should reach out to Phila-Locksmith as soon as possible.

Vehicles and Transponder Chips

Transponder Car Key Replacement PhiladelphiaYou may have no clue whether or not your vehicle includes a transponder chip. If you can’t confidently answer that question, you don’t have to enter panic mode. Simply bring your key to the nearest reputable hardware store, auto locksmith firm or auto dealership. A staff member there should be able to clue you in. You can also choose to test things out with the assistance of an extra key. This only works if you own a spare that began as a key blank. Put the spare key inside of your vehicle’s ignition. It should be able to easily and quickly open the trunk and all the doors. If your auto requires a transponder chip, it won’t be able to start your vehicle.

Locating a Reliable and Capable Auto Locksmith

If you’re looking for an auto locksmith Philadelphia folks can trust for high-quality professional car key replacement service, you can locate one in numerous different ways. Your remote is the only clue you need. You can also head to an auto dealership for further confirmation. An employee at a dealership can confirm a vehicle’s keyless entry system simply by assessing its VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) number. You should always make sure to confirm that you have been given the appropriate remote for your car. Look behind your remote. If the displayed part number is the same on the front and the back, you’re in good shape and have the right remote.

Locksmith Tips for Holiday Travel

Travel Tips from Your Local Philadelphia Locksmith

HolidayTravelTipsfromPhila-Locksmith

For most of the general population, the holiday season triggers feelings of excitement, joy, and the need to see distant cousins you haven’t spoken to in months.  According to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, during the Thanksgiving travel period there is a 52% increase in long distance travel just over the span of 6 days, and for the Christmas/New Year’s time frame long distance travel increases 23%. All this traveling makes the holidays an ideal time for home invasions while you’re away, and it also increases the chances of misplacing personal belongings, such as car keys, during one of your many stops this holiday season. At Phila-Locksmith we are extremely excited for the holidays and would hate to see the holiday cheer of anyone tarnished by running into any of the above-mentioned problems.  This is why we have come up with some simple travel tips that will make a huge difference in your life this holiday season.

Residential Locksmith Travel Tips

Traveling during the holidays can potentially put your home at risk to be burglarized. It is imperative to take security precautions to ensure that your home does not fall victim to holiday thieves. When the amount of people traveling increases that also directly affects the amount of crime in any given area, because of a higher volume of traffic in the area, and most people are absent from their homes as well. The following tips will help you keep your home and your family safe this holiday season.

  1. Have your home security evaluated.
    1. One of our residential locksmith technicians can come out to your home and evaluate the security grade of your locks as well as suggest any changes or improvements you may want to make.
    2. Our technicians are able to assist you with installing safes in your home to keep valuables secure while you are away.
    3. We even have locksmith technicians who specialize in home security and surveillance that can come out to install a closed-circuit television system in your home as well.
  2. Make it look like someone is always home.
    1. Leave your lights on a timer so at night it will appear that your home is occupied, this will help to ward off criminals.
    2. Leave a vehicle parked in your driveway to make thieves think someone is home.
    3. Have a trusted friend or neighbor pick up your mail so unwanted visitors don’t notice a growing pile of mail in your mailbox, another indication that the home is empty.
  3. Do not post travel plans on social media.
    1. While it may be exciting to share your plans with friends, other people see your trip to Grandma’s house in Florida as a chance to burglarize your home.
    2. Another thing to keep in mind in relation to social media, don’t post your new lavish gifts online because it provides unwanted eyes a look into what you have that they could potentially try to take.
  4. Unplug your garage door openers.
    1. Some thieves think outside of the box, and rather than try to gain access to your home through an entry door, they use the garage door with a universal garage door opener remote. If you unplug your garage door opener before departing this will leave thieves stuck in their tracks.
    2. Ensure that you lock your garage door if you operate it manually.

Automotive Locksmith Travel Tips

Upon hearing the statistics regarding people who travel, it probably painted a beautiful image in your head of Septa stations and the airport being jam-packed with with people trying to figure out maps, schedules, tickets, and even life itself as they try to make it to friends’ and relatives’ homes.  Surprisingly, most holiday travel (91% to be exact), takes place in the form of a good, old-fashioned, family road-trip, according to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics.  That being said, the number of people who lose or lock their keys in their vehicle is directly affected, and that is where the automotive locksmiths at Phila-Locksmith come in handy.

  1. Bring a spare key with you.
    1. One way to avoid falling victim to being stranded outside of your vehicle is to have a spare key on you or your vehicle at all times. There are little magnetic lock boxes that can be placed on the undercarriage of your car to ensure that you always have a spare key on you.
    2. No spare key? No problem, we can have an automotive technician to you to make you a duplicate key within as little as 20 minutes. They will be able to provide, cut, and program the key on the spot.
  2. Put a tag on your keys with your contact information.
    1. By simply putting your name and phone number on your key chain you will greatly increase the chances of your keys finding their way back to you.
    2. We do not advise putting anymore personal information than that on your keys as it could lead to future security issues.
  3. Go through a mental checklist when exiting your vehicle.
    1. If you make it a habit to remind yourself to do a checklist each time you exit your vehicle it will help you remember to grab your keys.
    2. Each time you leave your vehicle ask yourself a few questions: Do I have my wallet? Do I have my keys? Did I turn my lights out? This exercise will stick with you and become second nature, almost guaranteeing you will never lose or forget your keys again.
  4. Lost your keys completely?
    1. First we recommend retracing your steps, and checking those pesky couch cushions before you panic. If you find your keys, great! If not, there is still no need to panic.
    2. Don’t worry if you’ve lost your keys, a car key specialist from Phila-Locksmith can come out to your location within as little as 20 minutes to make you a new key on the spot. The new key will be cut and programmed to your vehicle and will have you back on the road within as little as an hour!
    3. While you  have a technician out there making you a replacement car key, it might be time to invest in that spare key we mentioned earlier, especially if you’re already getting a new key made, it will be easier on your wallet, and the technician to make a second key at that time.

We hope that these simple tips will make a big difference in your lives this holiday season. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any residential or automotive locksmith needs you may have this holiday season please give us a call. We have customer service associates on call 24/7 to help you out no matter how last minute your travel plans are. A technician is guaranteed to be out to you in as little as 20 minutes. We thank you for your business and hope the upcoming holidays are joyful.

Tricks to Beat this Tricky Weather

frozen lockFall, in my opinion, is one of the best seasons. It isn’t too cold, not too hot, you get a bunch of free candy, and then get to stuff your face with a Thanksgiving feast. What’s not to love? This fall has been a little bit different, though. As I am sure you’ve noticed, there have been a few days topping the charts at 80℉ and then the temperatures at night have been dipping down to around 35℉. While these drastic temperature changes pose a threat to your immune system, did you know that they can also affect the performance of your locks?

As your neighborhood Philadelphia locksmith, we here at Phila-Locksmith always strive to provide you with the most up to date information regarding your home, business, or automobile.  We have a little science lesson for you to further explain what is happening to your locks. Thermal expansion is the movement of the molecules within any given object due to temperature change. Therefore if a metal object is heated up it will expand because the molecules are in motion and moving apart from each other. Inversely, when an object is exposed to colder temperatures the molecules within move closer together and become stationary causing the object to contract or get smaller.

Due to the expansion and contraction of molecules, your locks have been going through a lot lately, so you may have noticed them sometimes sticking or having a little bit of trouble to turn. In weather like this, that is perfectly normal. You may have even experienced your locks freezing already. Your lock can freeze overnight (or throughout the day depending on the temperature) simply because of any water or condensation that may be within the lock. When this water in the lock freezes to the tumbler, it can make it nearly impossible to use a key within the lock. The last thing you want to do is try to force the lock open, because most likely you’ll just end up breaking the key within the lock. And while a trusted Philadelphia locksmith like us is always around the corner to assist with a broken key extraction or lock change, it is still best to save both time and money. Here are some home repair tips for a frozen lock that we have gathered for you:

HeatingKey

  1. Keep deicer or WD-40 accessible in numerous locations. It’s no help to you to keep deicer in the back seat of your car, because if your find the lock to be frozen you won’t be able to get to the deicer to melt the ice around the lock. Be sure to keep some in your home and vehicle that way no matter the situation you will always have it handy.
  2. Use a lighter to heat up your key before sliding it into the lock. You may have to repeat the process a few times, but eventually it will melt the ice around the tumblers within the lock.
  3. Dip your key in Vaseline and turn it in the lock. This process usually takes some time and has to be repeated as well, but it does usually show positive results. You can also use this as a preventative method against the cold, and lubricate your locks once a week during the frigid, winter months.
  4. You can pre-treat your locks as well as the frame of your vehicle door to prevent the lock from freezing as well as the door being frozen shut.
  5. NEVER POUR HOT WATER OVER A LOCK, it will only add more water to the internal mechanisms of the lock and lead to more freezing problems in the future.

We hope that you find these tips useful and you don’t find yourself in a predicament locked out of your home or vehicle due to frozen locks. In the event that you do find yourself locked out of your home, business, or vehicle never hesitate to give us a call for our emergency locksmith services.  We have reliable Philadelphia locksmith technicians that are on call and ready to assist you. Even if you happen to break your home or vehicle key within a frozen lock our technicians here at Phila-Locksmith can extract your broken keys for you and even make you a new replacement car key or change your locks right there on the spot. Give us a call today at (215) 554-6109 to set up a service or even have a technician come out to inspect your locks and let you know what you can do to make sure you are winter ready.

Valet Key More Important Than Ever

Valet keys have been a way for car owners to ensure the security of their vehicle for a long time. However, with the introduction of technology which has made it easier than ever to copy keys having a valet key for your car is more important than ever. If you use a valet to park your vehicle, you are trusting that individual not only with an expensive piece of equipment, but also the security of your home, and possibly business as well. This is why Phila-Locksmith highly recommends that you only use a valet service if you have a valet key to provide for them.

Automotive Security Concerns

Online key duplication has become a security concern for some individuals. While the security risk is minimal in many circumstances, valet service is one of the scenarios where the risk to automotive security can be very real. If you do not have a transponder car key for your vehicle, using a valet service can pose a serious security concern. Using a key duplication smart phone application anyone with access to your key would be able to take a picture of the key and have a duplicate mailed to their address. If you do have a transponder car key system on your vehicle, then using a valet key can decrease the risk to your automotive security.

Home and Business Security Concerns

By using a valet key you can prevent anyone who will have access to your vehicle from also having access to the other keys on your key ring. Especially through the use of an online key duplication service, your home or business key could be copied. Since the thief would also have access to your GPS, you can easily be accurately targeted by thieves. With just a few clicks on their smartphone and your GPS, that valet could have a copy of your key and an exact address of where to use that key. It is for this reason that even if you do not use a valet key, to ensure that you remove the rest of your keys from the ring when handing your keys over to the valet.

Valets have been around for a long time and are certainly popular in center city Philadelphia, but advances in technology have left concerns about the level of security that you have when leaving your keys with one of the attendants. This is why it is wise to take security precautions before handing the key ring over to your valet attendant. Be sure to have a valet key to provide to that individual, if not; remove the rest of your keys from the key ring so that an online duplication service can not be used to make a copy of your existing keys. As always, Phila-Locksmith will continue to update you with latest security concerns regarding your keys and locks. It is important to stay, reasonably, concerned with smart technology in regards to security. If you are unsure about how smart technology could affect your security speak directly with a professional like the technicians at Phila-Locksmith.

More Police Refusing to Provide Free Unlocks

In a move which is becoming more and more common among local police forces, a police department in Brandon, Mississippi, is warning residents that they will no longer be able to offer free unlocking service if you have locked your keys in the car. This move comes due to liability concerns that police departments have, now that automotive security has become more sophisticated in many model vehicles. Previously, many small police forces would offer these emergency unlocks as a service to the community, but this has become impossible for them to do with any regularity due to the new sophisticated systems in many new cars on the road.

Automotive Security Improvements

Here on our blog, Phila-Locksmith has detailed the automotive security changes which many major car manufacturers are undergoing. Initially the transponder car key systems did not cause a problem for police officers looking to help a citizen out. Early transponder chip car keys only effected the ignition’s function. Since the transponder car key still functioned the same way that a traditional car key would have with respect to the door lock. This allowed for police forces to continue offering free unlocking, if they had the available resources. Now there are even more changes in automotive security and safety which has made it impossible to offer unlocking service on a regular basis without having professional experience.

No More Free Police Unlocks

Some of the advancements which have left these police forces unable to provide emergency unlocking include side airbags, thinner windows and enhanced door construction. Police offers are not professionally trained locksmiths so they simply do not know how to open more advanced car doors without causing damage to the vehicle. Since police officers have much more pressing issues to get to, it would be a waste of time for a department to dispatch an officer to assist especially give that they may not even be able to get the vehicle open. The recommended step to take to ensure that you are never left locked out of your vehicle is to find a 24 hour locksmith who you can trust and save their information to your phone. Phila-Locksmith has detailed some easy tips that will help you to find a locksmith who you can trust and will be able to turn to whenever you are in need of assistance.

The only time that one should call the police when they are locked out of their vehicle is if there is a child or animal locked in the vehicle. Many police departments will only even dispatch a police officer to unlock the door for an animal if the pet is in imminent danger. For now, you will have to make the call to your local locksmith if you find yourself locked out of your vehicle. Phila-Locksmith recommends calling multiple locksmiths before you find yourself in need of their services. This allows you to ask applicable questions and get comfortable with the company that you will be using. In the Philadelphia tri-state area, give Phila-Locksmith a call and trust your emergency unlock service to our professional technician.

6 Week Old Baby Left in Car Outside Wal-Mart

(VIA NBC10) In a story that is becoming all to common this summer, another mother was found to have left her child inside of her SUV outside of the Wal-Mart on Franklin Mills Boulevard. Just last week we detailed the heroic story of a 3 year old who was able to save an elderly man locked inside of his car, and the dangers of automotive heat stroke. Needless to say, it is never safe to leave your child unattended in a vehicle, especially in the summer. In just a matter of minutes the temperature inside of a locked vehicle can reach dangerous levels, so no matter how fast the trip will be, always bring your child with you.

Luckily for this family, a passerby saw the child locked inside of the vehicle and called police. By the time that police and medical personnel had arrived on the scene, the mother had returned to the vehicle. The mother of the 6-week-old was taken in by police for questioning and after examination, the child was released to his father. Fortunately in this case the child was not harmed, but it is always important to remember to bring your child with you whenever you exit your vehicle. Below you can find a list of preventative tips that will help you to always remember when your child is in the back seat of your car.

Tips to Avoid Leaving Your Child in the Car

One of the best recommendations that we have at Phila-Locksmith is to put your cell phone with your child in their car seat. Not only will you remember to grab your child since you will have to get your phone from the car seat, but you can avoid using your cell phone on the road, which is illegal in the city of Philadelphia. Putting your cell phone in your child’s car seat is a perfect way to kill two birds with one stone. There are also companies which offer products that give you a notification anytime you have strayed too far from your child. These products attach to your child’s clothing and another sensor is on a bracelet the parent car wear. When this is used in a car, the parent would be warned as soon as they walked away from the car that their child was still inside.

It is always a bad idea to leave your child in a vehicle unattended. Many of the incidents of vehicular heat stroke that are occur and are reported by news happen when a parent claims that they forgot their child in the backseat. Unfortunately there are still plenty of parents out there who think it is alright to leave a child in the car, even if just running inside of the store for a second. While sometimes parents may be able to get away with a quick run into the store, it only takes one time for tragedy to strike.

Jiggler Keys: An Automotive Security Concern

Previously in our blog posts, we have touched on the security issues that can arise from the use of bump keys. Thieves use bump keys to easily gain access to your home in a theft, but a bump key is not effective for automobiles. Car owners still need to be wary about the threat of automotive theft which occurs thousands of times a year just in the city of Philadelphia alone. To begin with, older model vehicles are much more likely to be targeted by car thieves than newer vehicles. The reason that older model vehicles are targeted is they do not require a transponder chip inside of the key, which newer models do. This transponder key prevents the vehicle from being started unless a key that has been specifically programmed to that vehicle is placed in the ignition.  This poses the questions, what tools are thieves using to steal cars and how can you protect yourself?

Jiggler keys are to car thieves are what bump keys are to residential burglars. While the two keys operate in a slightly different fashion their design and principles of function are about the same. While bump keys use a cut down version of the lock’s key, a jiggler key is a generic copy of a certain make vehicle’s key. This generic key is put into the ignition and what the thief hopes is that the ignition is warn enough that the key will be able to start the vehicle even though the cuts do not match. In some cases this is extremely easy for thieves, especially in vehicles that have a high degree of wear to them. Both the ignition itself and the outside door lock can be compromised by jiggler keys and outside of purchasing an entirely new vehicle there is not much that can owners can do to prevent this from happening. In Western Washington, were jiggler keys and auto thefts have become a big problem this year, police are warning all citizens to be wary and notify them of any suspicious behavior. Police who have arrested thieves using jiggler keys before have noted that many of these thieves do not carry just one jiggler key, but multiple keys for different make vehicles that they may encounter.

With advancements in technology jiggler keys should not be a security concern for much longer, however the large number of used vehicles on the road today indicates that there will still be targets for thieves to identify into the near future. Many car manufacturers, like General Motors, have an eye towards the future when it comes to automotive key security. General Motors, in part due to a massive ignition recall, hinted that all future model vehicles may come with push to start systems standard. This not only will improve the security of vehicles, but will also eliminate service needs that arise from key turned ignitions. The weight of the keys, plus everything that a person has on their key ring, and the circular turning motion of the ignition, wear and tear become extremely common place. Replacing this circular motion with a button prevents any mechanical damage that can occur from regular use.

For now, older car owners can protect their car from jiggler keys with the classic security of a steering wheel club. At just $20 putting a steering wheel club in place, when you do not have a transponder or push to start system, is the best way to protect yourself from automotive thieves. Car owners can look forward to the day that push to start systems are standard, after all, it is much more difficult to steal a vehicle when it requires twenty minutes of programming and an very expensive machine!

Bump Keys Still Pose a Security Threat

(VIA 5ABC – Cleveland) Recently the local ABC affiliate in Cleveland has brought to light a problem which we have previous detailed in our blog, and that is the security risk that bump keys pose. With the easy availability of information through the internet, it is extremely easy for individuals to get instructions on how to pick or bump keys. This can give criminals easy access to your home if you do not properly protect yourself. In just a matter of seconds a criminal, even an unskilled one, can be inside of your home with no signs of forced entry with the assistance of a bump key. This begs the question, what can be done to help prevent your home from being infiltrated using bump keys and lock picks?

Have Bump Proof or Resistant Locks Installed

Previously we specifically detailed the NightWatch deadbolt which is manufactured by Master Lock. This lock has a mechanism which allows for the cylinder to be moved when the lock is engaged and makes it impossible for the lock to be opened from the outside, even if that intruder has a key. This type of lock can be the perfect way to make sure that your home is secure even as you sleep. There are a range of bump proof and resistant locks which are on the market, speaking with one of our professional technicians and describing your needs is the best way to find out which lock is right for your home. Kwikset offers a unique key way which makes it nearly impossible for criminals to compromise with a lock pick or bump key. In addition to these types of locks, many models of smart locks do not have a traditional key way which is exposed, so moving your home into the 21st century with a smart lock can help to eliminate this security gap which occurs in traditional locks.

Use a Secondary Lock

Like the steering wheel club which predated the transponder car key for automotive security, adding a secondary lock to your existing deadbolt can ensure that someone using a lock pick or bump key can not enter your home. A secondary lock such as a latch or chain lock can ensure that no one is able to enter your home. However there is an inconvenience with using a secondary lock, you would be unable to exit through that door and must use a side or garage exit to leave.

Both of these are effective ways to prevent criminals with lock picks or bump keys from entering your home and the locksmith Philadelphia that we offer is glad to assist you in having either installed. He can come to your location with a range of locks that vary in security and features so that you can find the lock that offers you the perfect combination of affordability and security. Whether a break-in has just occurred and you need to have your security back on line as soon as possible, or you want to find out more about the advantages of our locksmith services, make one easy call to Phila-Locksmith and our customer service team will be more than happy to take anyone of your questions.
